Author Jan Yager, who has a Ph.D in Sociology from City University in New York, uses this likable cat to show youngster's in the 3 to 7 year old age group that everyone is unique and special in his or her own way. Although Yager is the author of 21 adult books to include: When Friendship Hurts; Business Protocol; Friendshifts; The Vegetable Passion and Making Your Office Work for You, the Cantaloupe Cat marks her debut as a children's book writer. Yager, a fervent cat lover, wrote the story about Jerry, the original cantaloupe cat, more than a decade ago, but it wasn't until she met Westport, Connecticut illustrator Mitzi Lyman that the book became a reality as she and Yager collaborated on the version you see here today. Lyman, with a degree in human development from the Univeristy of Massachusetts and an equally fervent cat lover, jumped at the chance to illustrate this book (her first children's book illustration) because she feels, "...a child's development is dependent upon his or her feelings of positive self-worth and self-esteem, an underlying theme of The Canataloupe Cat."
